Hidden Charges in Gold Loans: Processing Fees, Valuation, Stamp Duty & 18% GST

By Financial Research Team•Reviewed by Vibhor Patil (Fintech Systems Architect)•Updated: October 2026

Why the Advertised Rate is Deceptive

When a lender advertises an attractive 8.75% or 9.50% p.a. interest rate, they are stating the nominal headline rate. Upfront administrative deductions—ranging from processing charges to appraiser fees and mandatory 18% GST—are subtracted directly from your sanctioned loan before money reaches your hands. As a consequence, you pay interest on money you never actually received, inflating your Effective Annual Percentage Rate (APR) by 1.5% to 3.0%.

1. The 6 Hidden Fees in Indian Gold Loans

Before signing loan sanction documentation, always request an itemized breakdown of these six mandatory charges:

1. Loan Processing Fee

0.25% to 1.50% (or ₹500 – ₹2,500 flat)

Charged by the lender to cover administrative overhead, loan onboarding, KYC verification, and vault ledger registration. PSU banks often cap this at ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, whereas NBFCs may charge a percentage-based fee that scales with the loan size.

2. Jewel Appraiser / Valuation Fee

₹250 to ₹750 per appraisal

Fees paid to the certified assayer who performs the touchstone acid test, weighs each ornament, and issues the official appraisal certificate. Some banks deduct this per packet, while others charge a slab-based fee based on total gold weight.

3. State Stamp Duty on Loan Agreement

0.10% to 0.50% of loan amount

A state government tax levied under local Stamp Acts on the pledge agreement. For instance, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have distinct ad-valorem schedules for movable hypothecation.

4. Documentation & Legal Search Charges

₹100 to ₹500

Nominal fee levied for generating duplicate loan passbooks, legal declarations, and verifying ownership indemnity undertakings.

5. Vault Custody & Transit Insurance

0.05% to 0.20% p.a.

While RBI mandates that lenders insure pledged jewelry against burglary, robbery, and fire, certain lenders pass this annual insurance premium back to the borrower under ancillary service line items.

6. Goods and Services Tax (GST @ 18%)

18% on ALL fee components

While the pure interest portion of a loan is exempt from GST, every administrative fee, processing fee, and valuation charge is legally subject to 18% GST. This tax cannot be waived by the branch.

2. Nominal Rate vs Effective Interest Rate (APR)

The mathematical formula for the true effective interest rate accounts for upfront deductions:

Effective Annual Rate (APR) = ((Total Interest Paid + Total Upfront Fees & GST) / Net Disbursed Principal) × (12 / Tenure Months) × 100

3. Worked Example: ₹1,00,000 Loan for 12 Months @ 9.5% Nominal

Notice what happens to a borrower who secures a ₹1,00,000 gold loan at an advertised 9.50% rate:

Item DescriptionAdvertised / NominalReal Incurred Cost
Sanctioned Principal₹1,00,000₹1,00,000
Less: Processing Fee (1.0%)Overlooked-₹1,000
Less: Assayer Valuation FeeOverlooked-₹500
Less: State Stamp Duty & DocsOverlooked-₹300
Less: GST on Fees (18% of ₹1,800)Overlooked-₹324
Actual Cash Disbursed to Borrower₹1,00,000₹97,876
1-Year Interest (on full ₹1,00,000 @ 9.5%)₹5,231 (reducing)₹5,231
Effective Annual Rate (True APR)9.50%11.63%

Because ₹2,124 was deducted upfront, your true annualized borrowing cost jumps from 9.50% to 11.63%.
