HUID & BIS Hallmarking: Impact on Gold Loan Approval & Value

By Bullion Research Analyst•Reviewed by Financial Research Team•Updated: October 2026

Key Hallmarking Realities

  • ✔Non-Hallmarked Jewelry is Still Accepted: Banks and NBFCs legally accept old or heirloom jewelry lacking BIS marks. However, it will undergo standard physical testing by the branch assayer.
  • ✔HUID Eliminates Appraisal Disputes: Hallmarked jewelry with a 6-digit laser-engraved HUID guarantees fineness, speeding up loan disbursement and preventing lowball purity estimates.

1. What is BIS Hallmarking & HUID?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulates gold hallmarking to certify purity and fineness. Since mandatory hallmarking took effect across India, every new piece of gold jewelry features three distinct laser marks:

  1. The BIS Standard Logo: The official triangular emblem confirming statutory certification.
  2. Purity & Fineness Grade: Stated as Karat and millesimal fineness (e.g., 22K916 for 91.6% pure gold, 18K750 for 75.0% pure gold, or 14K585).
  3. 6-Digit Alphanumeric HUID: Hallmark Unique Identification code laser-inscribed on the ornament, providing complete digital traceability to the registered assaying center.

2. Will Banks Reject Non-Hallmarked Jewellery?

No. While jewelers are legally barred from selling non-hallmarked new gold to consumers, borrowers are fully permitted to pledge ancestral, vintage, or non-hallmarked jewellery.

Here is what happens in practice:

  • With HUID: The appraiser verifies the hallmark under a magnifying loupe, cross-checks the piece, performs a quick scratch test, and sanctions the loan at the full 22K (916) rate in under 15 minutes.
  • Without HUID: The appraiser performs a more thorough acid test on a touchstone or uses an XRF Karatmeter. If an heirloom piece was manufactured with traditional solder or irregular alloys, the assayer might downgrade the appraised fineness to 20K or 18K.

3. How to Verify Your HUID Before Applying for a Loan

Before pledging your jewelry, you can independently verify its exact purity in 60 seconds:

  1. Download the official government BIS Care App (available on Android Play Store and Apple iOS).
  2. Navigate to Verify HUID.
  3. Type in the 6-digit alphanumeric code inscribed on your ornament.
  4. The app will display the date of hallmarking, the BIS recognized assaying center, the jeweler's registration number, and the certified karat purity.
